Bengaluru’s ambitious Suburban Rail Project is set to take a major technological leap by adopting the European Train Control System (ETCS) across all four corridors. The Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE) has proposed replacing the originally planned Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system to support future expansion, better interoperability, and higher-speed rail operations. The move is expected to strengthen the city’s long-term rail network as construction progresses toward a revised completion target of March 2030.
According to K-RIDE, ETCS is better suited for a growing suburban rail network that may eventually extend beyond Bengaluru’s city limits. Unlike CBTC, ETCS can efficiently manage longer-distance operations while supporting train speeds of up to 200–250 kmph, making it a future-ready signalling solution for expanding corridors.
The 148-km Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project was originally scheduled for completion by 2026. However, revised plans now target phased commissioning, with the Mallige Line expected by December 2028, followed by the remaining corridors through March 2030. The revised schedule reflects ongoing construction, land acquisition, and infrastructure development challenges.
The adoption of ETCS is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance safety, and provide seamless interoperability across the suburban rail network. As Bengaluru continues to expand, the upgraded signalling system could also support future regional and semi-high-speed rail services, helping reduce road congestion and improve daily commuting.
