India's First 10-Coach Hydrogen-Powered NaMo Green Rail Launched on July 17: 110 km/h Top Speed, 1,200 kW Power, 2,600 Passenger Capacity โ€” See Route, Distance & More

India’s First 10-Coach Hydrogen-Powered NaMo Green Rail Launched on July 17: 110 km/h Top Speed, 1,200 kW Power, 2,600 Passenger Capacity โ€” See Route, Distance & More

India has officially launched its first 10-coach hydrogen-powered NaMo Green Rail, marking a major step toward cleaner and more sustainable railway transportation. The train began operations on the 89-km Jindโ€“Sonipat route in Haryana, showcasing India’s growing focus on green energy and advanced rail technology.

Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the train produces electricity onboard while emitting only water vapour, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains.

Route, Distance and Journey Time

The NaMo Green Rail operates between Jind Junction and Sonipat Junction under Northern Railway. The route covers a total distance of 89 kilometres and includes 12 railway stations.

Although the train has a design top speed of 110 km/h, its current operational speed is around 75 km/h. The complete journey takes about 2 hours, resulting in an average end-to-end speed of approximately 44.5 km/h, including scheduled station stops.

Power, Speed and Passenger Capacity

The train consists of 10 coaches, including two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches. Each driving power car generates 1,200 kW of power, providing enough energy for smooth and efficient operations.

With a maximum design speed of 110 km/h, the train can accommodate around 2,600 passengers, making it one of the world’s highest-capacity hydrogen-powered passenger trains.

A Major Step Towards Green Rail Transport

A dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility has also been developed at Jind to support regular operations. The project is part of Indian Railways’ broader mission to reduce carbon emissions and adopt clean-energy technologies across the national rail network.

The launch places India among a small group of countries operating hydrogen-powered passenger trains while strengthening the country’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

Key Highlights

  • India’s first 10-coach hydrogen-powered NaMo Green Rail has been launched.
  • Operates on the 89-km Jindโ€“Sonipat route in Haryana.
  • Covers the journey in about 2 hours.
  • Average operational speed: Around 44.5 km/h (including station stops).
  • Design top speed: 110 km/h; current operating speed is around 75 km/h.
  • Powered by two 1,200 kW hydrogen driving cars.
  • Can carry approximately 2,600 passengers.
  • Emits only water vapour, supporting zero-emission rail transport.

Conclusion

The launch of the NaMo Green Rail is a significant milestone for Indian Railways and the country’s clean-energy ambitions. As hydrogen-powered technology expands across the railway network, it has the potential to transform rail travel with lower emissions, greater energy efficiency, and a more sustainable future.
